Our History
The Louisiana FIT Colon Program (FITCo) was funded by the state of Louisiana for fiscal year 2008- 2009. The program is administered by LSU School of Public Health, and is a statewide partnership of Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs), community clinics, and the LSU public hospitals.
Established at LSUHSC in July 2008, the program is currently operating in the following regions: Northwest Louisiana and Southeast Louisiana. FITCo is currently working with potential providers in Central Louisiana, Northeast Louisiana and South Louisiana to ensure screening services for residents in these areas.
Our Goal
The goal of FITCo is to prevent unnecessary disease, disability or premature death due to colorectal cancer in Louisiana men and women. To accomplish this goal, FITCo provides quality, no-cost, colorectal cancer early detection services to un- or under-insured, low and moderate-income Louisiana men and women aged 50-64. Special emphasis is given to reaching individuals who are of average risk. Expected outcomes include: stage shift in colorectal cancer; saving lives of citizens; and greatly reducing costs of treatment for state hospitals. Additionally, FITCo is addressing statewide capacity problems for colorectal cancer diagnosis.
